  Research Notes:

All historical and family records give his full name as "Joseph Leander Fish". The middle name of "Leander" is his paternal grandfather's first name. "Cornstalk" is not a family name, and "Blackfish" was not used as a family name except by children of Chief Black Fish (1725-1779). It was not used by descendents of William Jackson Fish, who was an adopted, white son of Chief Black Fish.

Noted events in his life were:

• Petition: to Office of Indian Affairs by Leander Jackson Fish through his attorney J. L. Bullock, 6 Feb 1896, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, (United States). 6 As an adoped member of the Quapaw tribe of Indians, L. J. Fish represented that his child [Joseph Paschal Fish] born January 21, 1895, 7 months before the completion of the Quapaw allotments, is entitled to an allotment [of land within the Quapaw territory]. The Commissioner [name illegible] recommended against such action in his letter to the Secretary of the Interior on 12 Feb 1896, on the grounds that the authority granted by the Department on March 14, 1891, for the Quapaw tribe to enroll Leander dis not extend to his children, "he then having none" ... "and it was not supposed that such adoption would include any one but himself."
