Born in Brora, about nine miles southwest of Helmsdale, in the historic county of Sutherland (now the Highland district) to John Munro and Catherine Campbell.

Harriet was the second of eight children, the youngest two born in Ontario.

After her family immigrated to Canada about 1832, she met and married Alexander Colquhoun in 1846. They settled in Williamsburgh, Dundas County, Ontario where they raised their children.
