John de Warenne 8th Earl of Surrey 1 2
Another name for John was John II de Warenne. Research Notes: May have built, or finished building, Holt Castle before his death. There is a record of officers of the Prince of Wales staying at Castrum Leonum (Holt) from 9th July to 6th August, 1347. It is unclear which of the Warennes commenced the building of the castle. Noted events in his life were: • Succeeded: to lordships of Bromfield (Wrexham) and Yale, 27 Sep 1304. upon the death of his grandfather, John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey. • Inherited: Castle Lions (Holt Castle) and Castle Dinas Bran, 27 Sep 1304. • Granted: all his lands, including castles Holt and Dinas Bran, to king Edward II, 29 Jun 1316. John married Joan de Barre. John next married Isabel de Howland. |
