Notes from a Pedigree Chart prepared by Donald W. Gold dated 25 Jul 1996:
"John spent his first fourteen years at Davis, Illinois where his Uncle Reuben and all his brothers slept in one small room of their father's hotel. When he was fourteen he left home with a small tin trunk that held all his worldly possessions and $2.00 in cash. He went to Delmar where he helped his brother Sidney who had a store there. Then he went into the implement business. He went to Big Stone Cityt, S. D. where his brother James was a telegraph operator, in 1884. He came back to Delmar, in September 1885 when he married Alice Harrington. They went to Cherokee, Iowa where he was with Frank Gold. Then he went to Humboldt, Iowa, for a while where he and Sidney were engaged in the business of manufacturing bed springs. In the summer of 1888 Sidney and John moved to Big Stone City, S.
