Burgess, William (b. 9 OCT 1721, d. 27 JUL 1778)
Note: [IMPORTANT - Researcher's Note]

William Burgess (known as William Burgess of Bedford County, Virginia), may be the possible son of John Burgess and Jane Mackelfresh. It is possible that William is the descendant of Colonel William Burgess, Esquire, of Maryland.

In the book "Anne Arundel Gentry" by Harry Wright Newman, William is listed as the son of John and Jane Burgess and was born at All Hallow's Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It has become popular family tradition that this is fact. However, questions of William's origins persist and without good reason.
Failing documented civil records, William's parentage and birthplace is questioned.

Other sources state William was born in England. Again there remains some confusion as William may have been born in Standon Parish, Westmoreland or Staffordshire England. No written or documented proof supports this at this time.

Additionally, one source identifies William as being the son of John Burgess and Dorothy Lovat of Staffordshire, England.

Without documented civil records, it cannot be conclusively determined whether William is a direct descendant of Colonel William Burgess of Maryland or a descendant of related Burgess family.
