Research Notes: Husband - Jørgen Christensen

Two children of Jorgen Christensen and Helene Nissen were born before their marriage date of 1830. There may have been two couples with the same names at the same approximate time and place.

His last name appear as either Christensen or Sorenson or both.

There is a baptism record for Anna Helena Jorgensen, 2 March 1828 in Svenstrup, Åbenrå-Sonderborg, Denmark with father Jorgen Chrestensen Sorensen and mother Helena Nissen, one for Maria Jorgensen 28 March 1834, same place, same parents, and another for Maren Jorgensen 12 Nov 1837, same place and parents. The dates and place appear to tie to Lauritz Jorgensen/Johnson, whose marriage record gives his father's name as "Jorgen Christensen Or Sorensen" with mother's name Helena.

A transcribed marriage record for Jørgen Christensen and Ellen Cathrine Nissen lists his father (Christen Pedersen) and has his age as 30. 26

Notes: Marriage

Marriage date may have been 20 June 1830

Research Notes: Child - Anna Maria Jorgensen

Since her birthdate precedes the marriage of Jorgen and Helene, two families may have been inadvertently merged here. 28

Research Notes: Child - Matthis Christensen

Two children of Jorgen Christensen and Helene Nissen were born before their marriage date of 1830. There may have been two couples with the same names at the same approximate time and place. 30

Research Notes: Child - Anna Helena Jorgensen

There is a baptism record for Anna Helena Jorgensen, 2 March 1828 in Svenstrup, Åbenrå-Sonderborg, Denmark with father Jorgen Chrestensen Sorensen and mother Helena Nissen. The date and place appear to tie to Lauritz Jorgensen/Johnson, whose marriage record gives his father's name as "Jorgen Christensen Or Sorensen" with mother's name Helena. 31

Research Notes: Child - Lauritz Jorgensen

Name Lauritz Johnson from published obituary of John J. Johnson d. 1929.
First and last name may not have been Lauritz Johnson originally. Some family oral traditions hold that the name was originally Jorgensen.

Mark Johnson (May 2012) has a good amount of information about the family of a Lauritz and Caroline Johnson, who lived in Gibson City, Illinois after immigrating to the United States in 1880. It is likely that those persons are this same family. That family was from Schleswig-Holstein, which makes sense, as there is some confusion about Denmark vs. Germany, and the town of Bov (Bau) in which John J. Johnson was born is in Schleswig.

U.S. Census records indicate that Lauritz and Caroline had 12 children.
--
Parents of a Lauritz Jorgensen baptized on 26 Jun 1831 in Svenstrup were Jorgen Christensen and Helene Nissen.

Denmark Burials, 1640-1917 (FamilySearch.org) yields another, yet less likely, possibility:
Lauritz Johann Johannsen
b.
d. 7 Jan 1870 in Ketting, Sonderborg, Denmark
Buried 13 Jan 1870
Father Gustav Johann Johannsen
Mother Anne Larsdatter/Larsdotter 33

Research Notes: Child - Maria Jorgensen

There is a baptism record for Maria Jorgensen, 28 March 1834 in Svenstrup, Åbenrå-Sonderborg, Denmark with father Jorgen Christensen Sorensen and mother Helena Nissen. The date and place appear to tie to Lauritz Jorgensen/Johnson, whose marriage record gives his father's name as "Jorgen Christensen Or Sorensen" with mother's name Helena. 36

Research Notes: Child - Maren Jorgensen

Marriage is speculative.

There is a baptism record for Maren Jorgensen, 12 November 1834 in Svenstrup, Åbenrå-Sonderborg, Denmark with father Jorgen Christensen Sorensen and mother Helena Nissen. The date and place appear to tie to Lauritz Jorgensen/Johnson, whose marriage record gives his father's name as "Jorgen Christensen Or Sorensen" with mother's name Helena.

A Maren Jorgensen, with father Jorgen Christensen was married to Vilhelm Sivert Jocob Casspersen in 1860 in Svenstrup. It is, of course, possible that there were several persons with similar names in the Åbenrå area around the same time, but I'm making a guess that Maren Jorgensen and Maren Sorensen are the same person. Both were born in 1837.

From Mark Johnson, 12 May 2012:
"... there is a record that
Vilhelm married a Maren Jorgensen (b 1837 - which does
match the birth year) on 06May1860. If this is true, then
Lauritz's sister (Maren) married Caroline's brother (Vilhelm).
Do not know what I think of this - I do note that Vilhelm
Jacob carries both of his parents name (Johann Jacob
and Carolina Wilhelmine). And the locality is spot on as
well." 37

She signed her name "Cecilie" on a postcard to Edith Poapst in 1910. Some legal documents have "Cecilia."

According to FindaGrave.com 5 Feb 2016:
"Parents were Peter Raven and Mary A. Christianson, both of Denmark."

At least one handwritten note on a photograph (by Edith Poapst Wallace?) gives her maiden name as "Cecilie Raure."

Her Minnesota marriage record has clearly written "Rawn." That of her son Gordon's marriage gives her name as "Cecilia Raven." 39 40

The part of Prince Georges County in which he was born became Frederick County in 1749 and is now Montgomery County, Maryland.
