Ellis Peters
1913 - 1995
Ellis Peters was the pen name of Edith Pargeter, born in Shropshire on the Welsh border in 1913. She is best known for her colorful and well-researched series of novels featuring the 12th-century Benedictine monk Brother Cadfael. Each Cadfael novel is set against such a rich and clearly-depicted backdrop that the reader delights in feeling transported in time and place. Popularized by the superb television productions starring Derek Jacobi, the Brother Cadfael Chronicles are best read in the order written, since the characters and relationships develop from one book to the other, and historical events unfold over time.
In addition to the Cadfael series, Peters wrote mysteries set in the 20th century featuring Inspector Felse, current affairs novels, historical novels and translations of Czech classics into English. She earned numerous honors during her lifetime, including the British Crime Writers Associations' Silver Dagger and Cartier Diamond Dagger awards, an Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America, and the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Queen Elizabeth.
