Mother: Anna Dorothea Caroline Caspersen (1835-1910) 3

Events

• Emigrated: from Denmark to the United States, 1880.

Children

Birth Notes: Wife - Matilda C. Johnson

Have been unable to determine what place "Taglesbraw" refers to.

Research Notes: Wife - Matilda C. Johnson

Matilda may not have been a child of Lauritz and Caroline. From Mark Johnson 3 May 2012:
"In addition, there is a Chris C. Johnson (1865 or 1866 - 1901) who married Matilda Jensen (?) (April 1871 - 31Aug1938), both of whom are buried in Gibson City, Ill. It is confusing because Matilda is listed by the historical society as 'daughter of Lauritz Jensen Johnson.' No listing of Chris C. parents."

The 1900 census has "Caroline Johnson, Mother" living with Chris and Matilda in Ford County, Illinois. Caroline may have been Chris' mother instead, since he was the head of the household.

Christine's first husband was Ed Gerber, who died in 1931.

Research Notes: Child - Jack Walter Johnson

From Mark Johnson 6 May 2012:
"My father was Jack Johnson. I recall his parents/my grandparents fought for years over that - his father/mny grandfather (and therefore in the Johnson/perhaps Jorgensen) line grumbled it should have been John as the family always had "John's". His mother/my grandmother would hear none of it - she said the "deal" was the Johnson's got the family name if it was a girl (they had chosen Anna for her mother-in-law Anna Walters) and her side got the naming rights on a son - she grumbled she had compromised in not naming it after her side. She said she split the difference and named her son Jack hoping that the Johnsons would think it was a nickname for John.

"Was life really simpler back then??????"

From Mark Johnson 15 May 2012:
"I came across a photo in that stack my brother dropped off of an elderly man throwing a baseball with a young boy - I am pretty sure it is my great-grandfather Louie and my Dad - it is labelled "21 W. Collingwood - 1941". So, it is possible that Louie and Caroline moved to New Jersey (they lived in Haddon Heights, NJ at some time) as early as 1941...

"NJ doesn't jive with my father Jack's often told, always
hilarious stories of his boyhood in Montana - spent scanning the
night skies for Japanese fighters and bombers, days spent listening for Japanese words as the Native Americans that worked on ranches would sit in his kitchen as his mother Christina feed them. I guess Jack could have come east for summers (and to ensure his safety from those Japanese warplanes flying over Montana). "

----------
From DeWayne B. Johnson on 15 Jun 2010:

I think my nickname "Doc" dates back at least 75 years, perhaps to 1935. I was 15 years old. My older brother Clifford and I worked on my uncle's (George M. Talbot Dairy) dairy ranch in Burbank. Neither of us milked cows but we did almost everything else -- washing bottles, pasteurizing and bottling milk, churning of buttermilk, pitching hay, mucking out the muck, and much more. Clifford called me "Doc" and I called him "Joe." Uncle George had a hay ranch out east (?) of Lancaster and pasture land down near Irvine. I rode mules and horses in the course of my work. Fell off more than once, brushed off by low-hanging branches. Otherwise, I am no horseman!

Clifford's nickname never stuck, but mine remained with me even up to today! I earned a real doctorate at UCLA in mass communications and education in 1955. Throughout my professional career as a journalist and professor of journalism, my colleagues and students have hailed me as "Doc." They still do. It feels good to be one of them and not an outsider!

I run the risk of bragging a bit -- two Pulitzer Prizes with a select few on the LATimes editorial staff, and twice honored by the California Publishers Association as THE outstanding professor of journalism in the state of California. (Oh, I am shameless!) So I may be something of a legend, my ego says, but that truly remains to be seen.

Had no children.
From Mark Johnson 13 May 2012:
"Dorothy married John Volkmann, an engineer at RCA, who was
a designer of sound systems in numerous arenas, including
the sound system at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
and the Mann Center in Philadelphia.

"They lived in Princeton and my memory as a child was that
Dorothy and Lorene and Harry and John went everywhere and
did everything together.

"As an aside, when John Volkmann passed away, Dorothy wanted
to remain on her own in Princeton. So my father Jack (the only child
of Clarence, Dorothy and Lorene) fixed her up in an apt right
across from the university. I helped move Dorothy in (I was
in my early 20s) and would occasionally go visit Dorothy to see
how she was. I walked in one day and siting in her kitchen, eating
lunch with her, was Brooke Shields, who attended Princeton and
lived in the building. Dorothy had no idea who she was, I mean none,
but I did. I visited Dorothy a lot more often after that and so there
we would sit, on several occasions, my slightly ditzy 80 year old aunt,
this huge celebrity (who really was very nice, especially to Dorothy), and
me, with visions of red carpets and celebrity in my future if only...........
oh well.......I still remember her eyebrows."
